Digital is a Tactic and not Your Marketing Strategy

Part of me hated writing that headline because I love digital – I was born into it. My father was a Computer Science Professor at the University of Manitoba and I had always grown up with computers – I was using Macs before they were “cool”. I knew about C++, Java and created my own (awful) websites by the time I was 12. While the landscape of what digital marketing has become some what more complex; to encompass social, SEO/SEM, targets, Google AdWords, email marketing etc. The fundamentals stay the same. Digital is a tactic, it is a tool by which we communicate; it in and of itself cannot be communication itself.

And such is the issue trying to navigate the tech world, figuring out how to make stuff look “really cool” without fundamentally understanding what the message is and who exactly you are talking to. Due to my psychology/english degree, I have always been preoccupied with not what people precisely say but in the way that they say it; and even, what they perhaps are not saying. Just because someone uses over elaborate language and even sings something does not mean that their message is sound or that that there is heart to what they are saying.
